This banana date smoothie is a rich, creamy, and guilt-free treat that takes just a few minutes to make! The fruity, tropical flavours of banana blend with the caramel-y notes of the dates for a naturally sweet shake. This nutritious smoothie will keep you satiated all day.

Banana dates smoothies are perfect for an easy breakfast, a gym recovery snack, or a decadent and healthy dessert.

This smoothie is inspired by the Persian (Iranian) drink called Majoon, also known as Majoun or Ma'jun. Majoon is known for its sweet and aromatic flavour and is essentially a blend of bananas, dates and toasted nuts.

I have further added some warm spices and vanilla to the mix to play with the sweet notes of banana and dates in my smoothie.

If you are looking for an energy boost, this sugar-free drink is your ultimate solution. Not only is it healthy and nutritious but it's also perfect to curb your sweet tooth, just like my tiramisu overnight oats.

During the month of Ramadan, this smoothie is also the ideal Suhoor fix since it's so filling and takes just a couple of minutes.

The best part of my banana date smoothie recipe is how quick and easy it is to make with just a few simple ingredients!

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • It uses all-natural ingredients with no added sugar or preservatives.
  • The smoothie takes just a few minutes to make.
  • It's a healthy alternative to a dessert.
  • Thanks to its vitamins, minerals, and high fiber content, this banana and date smoothie is very nutritious.

Ingredients & Substitutions

Dates in a small plate and two bananas at the back.
  • Banana – Use ripe bananas! Smaller bananas will be much sweeter than larger ones. And if you got more ripe bananas lying around then whip up my Chocolate-Marbled Banana Bread!
  • Dates – This recipe works best with soft and chewy dates like Medjool. If the dates you use are not soft, soak them in water for some time before starting on with the banana smoothie.
  • Cinnamon Powder – Adds warmth to this banana date shake.
  • Milk – I used whole dairy milk. You can also use coconut milk or Greek yogurt. For dairy-free options try almond milk, soy milk, cashew milk or oat milk.
  • Almonds – You can sub the whole almonds with peanuts, pistachios or cashews!
  • Desiccated Coconut – The coconut is optional, but it gives some extra texture to the smoothie and complements the tropical flavors of the banana.
  • Vanilla Extract – Use vanilla extract instead of vanilla essence for a much more pure flavour.

How To Make Banana Date Smoothie

Let's make this banana date shake recipe!

Step by step process of making banana date smoothie with adding ingredients to the blender and then pouring the shake into a glass.
  1. Peel the banana and remove any pits from the dates.
  2. Put all the ingredients into a blender.
  3. Turn the blender on for 30 seconds or until the ingredients appear evenly blended.
  4. Pour into a cup and enjoy!

PRO TIP: Freeze your bananas beforehand to make the smoothie denser. Frozen bananas will give you a creamier, thicker drink.

Variations

Here are a couple of ways you can customize a Date Smoothie:

  • Add protein powder to turn your date smoothie into the perfect post-workout snack or as a healthy meal for any time of day!
  • Add an avocado and some leafy greens like spinach and kale and enjoy it as your ultimate breakfast smoothie.
  • Swap or incorporate more fruits like strawberries, raspberries, mango or kiwi to make it more refreshing
  • A little cocoa powder, dark chocolate or chocolate chips can turn this smoothie into a chocolate-y delight.
  • Chia seeds and flax seed can further enhance this natural energy drink.
  • Incorporate a nut butter like peanut butter or almond butter for extra creaminess.
  • A scoop of ice cream will make this delicious smoothie more decadent.
  • Chuck in some rolled oats which are a source of fibre and make the smoothie extra nourishing and rich. You can also use quick-cooking oats.

FAQs

The top of the date smoothie garnishes with sliced bananas, whole almonds, cinnamon powder and desiccated coconut.
1. Can I store Banana Date Smoothie?

Smoothies are best enjoyed fresh. You can keep it in the fridge for a little while but not for more than 3-4 hours.

2. Do the dates blend well?

Medjool dates are very soft and blend instantly. If you are using any other kind that is not soft, I recommend pre-soaking them.

3. What kind of blender to use for making smoothies?

Use a high-powered blender like Vitamix, Ninja or Nutribullet for the smoothest and creamiest smoothie. (This text contains affiliate links)
